Charging New Energy Vehicles in the Rain: Is It Safe?

Charging electric vehicles outdoors in the rain (excluding thunderstorms or heavy rainstorms) is generally not dangerous, as this concern has been addressed during the design and development of new energy vehicles. Most compliant charging components of new energy vehicles meet the IP67 waterproof standard, with waterproof insulation rings and diversion ports designed around the charging ports and plugs. Once the charging plug is inserted into the port, it forms a closed charging space, making rain charging safe.

Do Charging Plugs Need to Be Sheltered in the Rain?

In general, it is safe to leave charging plugs uncovered in the rain, as mentioned above, rain does not affect the charging of new energy vehicles. Of course, if conditions allow, users can cover the charging port to reduce psychological burden and prevent rainwater erosion of the charging plug and port.

It is important to note that when charging new energy vehicles in the rain, it is essential to find a charging station with higher ground elevation. Otherwise, low-lying parking spaces may accumulate water, making it difficult for vehicle owners to move around without getting wet shoes, and potentially causing damage to the vehicle if water seeps into the battery, leading to short circuits and potential scrapping.

However, in the case of thunderstorms, vehicles should preferably not be charged at outdoor charging stations. It is well known that lightning is attracted to electrically charged objects. Despite the installation of lightning rods and grounding connections on most outdoor charging stations, there is still a risk of vehicles being struck by lightning during charging. Opting for indoor charging stations provides the highest level of safety assurance.
