Detailed introduction to new energy charging gun standards
Jan 02, 2024
Let’s introduce the standards for car charging gun specifications.
Let me first put a very intuitive picture.
First of all, charging guns are divided into DC guns and AC guns, which in English are AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current). DC guns are high-current, high-power charging guns, which are generally equipped in fast charging stations for new energy vehicles. Those used at home are generally AC charging piles or portable charging guns.
1. AC charger
There are three main types, type1, type2 and GB/T, which can also be called American standard, European standard and national standard. Of course, Tesla has its own standard charging interface, but due to pressure, Tesla has also begun to change its standards according to market conditions to make its cars more suitable for the market. Just like domestic Teslas must be equipped with national standard charging mouth.
European Standard Electric Vehicle Charging Gun
①Type1: SAE J1772 interface, also known as J-plug
Basically, the United States and countries that have a closer relationship with the United States (such as Japan and South Korea) use Type 1 American standard charging guns, including portable charging guns carried by AC charging piles and cars. Therefore, in order to adapt to this standard charging interface, Tesla also has to provide a charging gun adapter so that Tesla vehicles can use public charging piles with Type 1 charging ports.

Type1 provides two main charging voltages: 120V (Level1) and 240V (Level2).
②Type2: IEC 62196 interface
Type2 is the new energy vehicle interface standard in Europe, and the rated voltage is generally 230V. The picture may look a bit like the national standard, but it is actually easy to tell the difference. The European standard is similar to the engraving, and the black part is hollow, which is the opposite of the national standard.
2. DC charging gun
3.5KW Charging Cable Level 2 Portable EV Charger
DC charging guns generally correspond to AC charging guns. Each region has its own standards, with the exception of Japan. Japan’s DC charging port is CHAdeMO. Of course, not all Japanese cars use this DC charging port. Only some Mitsubishi and Nissan’s new energy models use the following CHAdeMO DC charging port. Japanese DC charging port
Others are American standard Type1 corresponding to CCS1: mainly adding a pair of high-current charging holes below. American standard DC charging port
European standard Type2 corresponds to CCS2: European standard DC charging port
Naturally, we also have our own DC charging standard: national standard DC charging port
The rated voltage of DC charging piles is generally above 400V and the current reaches several hundred amps, so they are generally not for household use and can only be used at fast charging stations in shopping malls, gas stations and the like.
